What is remedial massage?

Remedial  massage refers to strong massage techniques aimed specifically at  relieving particular areas of pain in the body, rather than general  relaxation. It can involve all over massage to locate and release areas  of tension, or more targeted towards particular problem areas.
 
It can combine a number of different techniques such as:
 
Deep tissue massage: this is a technique that works deeply into the muscles and connective tissue to release chronic aches and pains.
Myofascial release:  this refers to pressure and movement applied to the fascial system,  which covers and provides support to the body, to remove restrictions;  and
Trigger point therapy:  this is the identification of trigger points, or areas of soft tissue  in the body characterized by local pain, tightness, and tenderness and  the application of appropriate pressure to release these points.  
 
Remedial  massage can positively influence your overall health and wellbeing by  helping to improve circulation and muscle relaxation, relieve pain and  increase mobility.

What is sports massage?

Sports  massage therapies can be considered as both preventative and therapeutic  in nature, as treatments can be tailored for event preparation,  maintenance as well as recovery, depending on your needs. 
 
As  part of a balanced exercise regimen, sports massage may be used by  athletes and weekend warriors alike to treat and/or assist in the  prevention of injuries, help improve flexibility, range of motion and  performance, and aid in mental clarity.
 
The  aim of sports massage is to free up fibrous tissue in the muscles and  help them to recover quickly after periods of sustained physical  activity.

Can I claim from my health fund?

Many health funds offer rebates for remedial massage treatments, and you should contact yours if you are unsure. 
 
I am registered with most, but not all, so please check with me prior to receiving a treatment, if this is important to you.

Question 5

How many massage treatments do I need?

Accepted Answer

Treatment can be on a one-off basis, although it is unlikely that a one-time  massage will solve a lifelong backache or other chronic pain.  That said, you should know within one or two sessions if my approach will help you.

Massage  therapy can also be tailored as part of a long term body maintenance or  preventative care program. It can also effectively complement other  treatments you may be receiving, for example from a chiropractor,  physiotherapist or doctor.

Are there side effects or risks to be aware of?

Massage  therapy is considered to be generally safe and is not known to have  serious side effects, provided it is performed properly and appropriate  precautions are followed.
 
One minor side effect may be some soreness afterward, but this should be temporary and is not harmful.
 
Precautions  may be necessary if you have any serious medical preconditions, such as  pregnancy, cancer, blood disorders or following recent surgery. It is  important that you disclose this information to me prior to commencing  any treatment in order that I can make a full assessment of your needs,  and the appropriateness of any treatment.
 
As  with any complementary or alternative treatments, if you do have a  pre-existing medical condition and are unsure of whether massage would  be appropriate for you, I suggest that you discuss your concerns with  your primary health care provider before proceeding.

Will it hurt !?

Accepted Answer

Remedial  massage differs from general relaxation massage in that it specifically  focusses on areas of discomfort, in order to release the  pain/restriction being experienced. While great care is taken to warm up  the area first before more intense treatment is applied, the focus of  this body work is the myofascial trigger points, that is, the muscle  ‘knots’ that both cause the current discomfort, and can cause symptoms  elsewhere in the body. These points can be painful when pressed.
 
Nevertheless,  you should always remember the amount of pressure applied at any time  is UP TO YOU! You are free to, and should, communicate with me  throughout the massage as to how you are feeling at any point in time  throughout the massage.
 
After  the massage you should feel some relief, although sometimes you may  experience 24-48 hours of soreness. This should be a ‘good’ kind of  sore, like you might feel after a hard workout. Light bruising is  possible but not at all common. 
 
I  would strongly suggest that you try and take it easy and rehydrate  afterwards, in order to enjoy the full benefit of the massage.

Where do you practice massage?

Since 2006 my primary place of practice has been located at my home unit in Cremorne. Treatments take place in a private and dedicated massage room and clients can also enjoy a grand view of Middle Harbour from the balcony!
 
I also  practice at various clinics in the local area. Other arrangements can be  made for corporate events or where there are special circumstances.
